sony Sony Bravia KDL 46Z4100

Traditionally, sports fans and cinephiles tend to knock LCD screens because motion tends to blur more than on plasmas. Sony’s new 1080p Bravia LCD, however, may actually win them over. It’s 120HZ technology doubles video frame rates and reduces motion blur, producing whiter whites and blacks as dark as plasmas. It may not be a Kuro, but at its price it is high on our list.  [$2499 at sonystyle]

sony xel1 msp1 Sonys super thin OLED television

Sony has unveiled a prototype OLED television less than a millimeter thin. The .9mm thin television was on display at Ceatec in Japan. Organic Light Emitting Diode televisions use an organic material to emit their own light, which means they don’t need a backlight, and can be much thinner than other sets. They also use less power, and can handle fast moving images better than comparable sets-not to mention, they look pretty cool. No word on when we can see the set for sale. [sony via PCWorld]

While its not quite yet a Kindle-killer, Sony’s new reader is a step closer to giving Amazon’s reader a run for its money.  The Sony PRS-700 is a touchscreen reader that allows page turning with the quick flip of a stylus.  The PRS-700 also includes a pull-up keyboard on the screen, ideal for taking notes and searching through text.  Beyond that, the 700 model is pretty close to Sony’s last version, the 550.  The PRS-700 provides storage for up to 350 ebooks via SD, and enough battery life for about 7500 turns of the page. The Sony PRS-700 will be available for sale in early November.  [$400 at sony]

Sony’s first foray into the high-end DSLR market brings today’s announcement of the Sony Alpha A900 DSLR.  The Sony Alpha A900 features a 24.6MP Exmor CMOS sensor, a 3″ picture quality LCD, a direct HDMI output and a whole host of image processing software rivalling that available by names like Nikon and Canon.  In addition to the Alpha A900 body, Sony will be releasing a line of Alpha lenses, including Sony’s usual Carl Zeiss namesakes in a range of qualities and functionalities.  In all, Sony’s introduction to the high-end market does not appear to dissappoint, and we welcome more competition to the Nikons and Canons of the world…
