samsung i7500 Samsung Turns to Android for I7500 Smartphone

In the war for smartphone operating system supremacy, Google’s Android has earned another recruit. Samsung’s I7500 will be the first smartphone from a major worldwide cell phone manufacturer. The 3.2-inch AMOLED touchscreen is good for viewing all sorts of Google services, such as Gmail, YouTube and Google Maps, along with apps from the Android Market. Other features include HSDPA and Wi-Fi support, a 5-megapixel camera, GPS and 8 GB of storage, plus a Micro SD slot for up to 32 GB more space. The I7500 is coming to major European markets in June, with no official word on a US release. However, Crave notes that the smartphone’s supported bands are compatible with T-Mobile’s 3G network. Perhaps a US announcement isn’t far behind. [via Akihabara News]

Solar-Powered Blue Earth is Quite Green

samsung blue earth awesome rm eng Solar Powered Blue Earth is Quite Green

Samsung appeases the treehugger set with the Blue Earth mobile phone. The first thing you’ll notice is its solar panel that provides enough charge to make a phone call in sunlight, but that’s not all. An “eco-mode” cuts down on unnecessary backlighting, brightness and bluetooth. The body is made of PCM — a plastic extracted from water bottles — and there are no harmful substances, such as Brominated Flame Retardants, Beryllium and Phthalatein, in the handset or charger. If all this doesn’t make you feel earthy enough, an “eco walk” app tells you how much CO2 you didn’t emit by walking instead of driving. There’s little else in the way of specs, but who cares? It’s green! Look for it in the UK during the second half of the year, price TBD. [Pocket-lint via Engadget]

Samsung is claiming “first” to pair 10x zoom with a wide-angle lens in its latest digital camera. The 10.2-megapixel WB500 (or the Hz10W in the US) includes hardware and software image stabilization, face detection auto focus, smile shot and blink detection. This camera was shown off earlier in the year at the Consumer Electronics Show, boasting features like Smart Albums for sorting photos and a wide range of manual controls to  make it feel professional-like, but Akihabara is quoting a new Korean press release in regards to Samsung’s self-appointed accolades. In any case, the camera is available now for $300. [Akihabara News via Electronista]

Samsung is reportedly working on its first full touchscreen phone. The M7600 is expected to have Bang and Olufsen audio, with am amp built-in to improve audio quality. The phone is also expected to have an AMOLED screen, 3-megapixel camera, HSPA-based 3G, and GPS.

The rumors come from some leaked photos of the device that hit the web this weekend. No word on what pricing would be for the phone- or if we’ll even see it come Mobile World Congress. From the looks of things however, it looks like MWC this year is shaping up to have a ton of pretty decent product announcements, despite the tumbling world economy.  [via Electronista]

Real Photography on a Cell Phone: Samsung Memoir

samsung memoir Real Photography on a Cell Phone: Samsung Memoir

For years we’ve found ourselves stuck on the convenience side of the quality/convenience compromise of cell phone cameras. Unlike your real camera that you take out for all those contrived photo ops, the cell phone camera is always there for the unexpected shot that you just have to take. Unfortunately, while those pictures are theoretically the best shots in your collection, you can barely make them out afterwards. Swept in by the winds of change, the Samsung Memoir destroys the compromise with an 8 MP camera with 16 x digital zoom, 5 shooting modes and Xenon flash. On one side of the phone, a brilliant touch screen beckons the fingertips, and on the other, a camera that actually looks like a camera is prepared to take REAL pictures. You don’t lose any of the other perks, either–bluetooth, built-in GPS and audio/video player are all there. The Memoir will be released on T-Mobile’s 3G network is expected to run $299 w/2 year contract. [DVICE]

Samsung Develops World’s Highest Density DRAM

samsungram Samsung Develops Worlds Highest Density DRAM

Samsung, already pleased with itself for introducing DDR, DDR2 and DDR3 RAM, said it has created the first-ever 4-gigabit (1 GB) SDRAM chip. Throw eight of these on a laptop memory stick and you’ve got twice the RAM that is currently available. It’s also more efficient than regular DDR3 memory thanks to a 50 nanometer manufacturing process, with an estimated 20 percent power savings of 2-gigabit sticks.  Transfer speeds reach 1.6 gigabits per second. Samsung doesn’t say when these chips will be commercially available, but the International Data Corporation  estimates that “over 2 gB” DDR3 RAM will comprise 3 percent of the market this year and more than half the market by 2012.
