After much anticipation, Google’s Android mobile operating system finally has its face– the T-Mobile G1. Coming October 13th, T-Mobile will be selling the self-branded HTC Dream loaded with the Android OS. The G1 is a flip-style touch-screen phone with a full QWERTY keypad, with plenty of functionality that is going to give the iPhone a run for its money. First, the G1 includes a 3MP camera, a slight upgrade over the sensor in the iPhone. Like the iPhone App Store, there will be an Android Market for applications both direct and third party. Instead of iTunes, Android will interface with Amazon’s MP3 store (which always seems to have a leg up on iTunes for DRM-free tunes). The best part? T-Mobile will be pricing the G1 at $179, with data plans starting at $25 per month… [t-mobile]

Save for that little Windows Mobile logo in the upper left corner of this brilliant touch phone, we’d be hard-pressed not to choose this over an iPhone. The HTC Touch HD gives the Apple iPhone a run for its functional money. The hardware on the Touch HD offers a 3.8-inch touch-screen and a 5MP camera, a step up over the 3.5-inch screen and the 2MP camera on the iPhone. Our only problem with the HTC Touch HD, as mentioned above, is its operating system. Raise your hands if Windows Mobile hasn’t ever taken a big dump on your phone… (disclaimer– your GC editor loves Mac AND Windows OS, just not Windows Mobile)

Apple’s multi-touch enabled iPhone paved the way for a long line of imitators. Many have been bunk knock-offs with zero functionality, while others yet have an opportunity to improve where Apple left off. One release showing much promise is HTC’s Diamond Smartphone, a function-packed touch screen beauty with plenty of bells and whistles. The Diamond Smartphone includes a 2.8-inch screen, a 3.5 megapixel camera, a 3D graphics processor and 4GB’s of storage. Like the iPhone, the Diamond includes a fully functional web browser. The Diamond Smartphone is also GPS enabled, making this one a navigation-friendly assistant. While the HTC Diamond isn’t slated for US release, it will be out in Europe in the near future. Those who like rare technology can find these at domestic boutiques, giving you a one-of-a-kind device that will make your iPhone fanboy friends blush…

The HTC Touch Cruise is a quadband GPS pocket PC phone with Windows 6.0 and a 2.8 inch touchscreen. It’s an “always-on” Internet gadget and the GPS software is by TomTom, which for many is a big plus. If you aren’t familiar with TomTom, you may learn to love them when using the turn-by-turn GPS navigation features in the HTC Touch Cruise. The HTC includes an MP3 player, FM radio, video playback and a 3MP digital camera. Some reviewers rave about the TouchFlo screen, too….if you are looking to cut down the number of gadets in your briefcase or messenger bag, this is definitely an option– the only thing missing on the Touch Cruise is a trouser press and frying pan.
