New Multi-Function Knife Design

Thursday, February 26, 2009 3:00PM - By Carl Weiss

wrenchmultitool2 New Multi Function Knife Design

As cool and useful as a good multi-tool is, there’s really not too much new design or creativity going on in the market. You have your Swiss Army Knife and you have your Leatherman. Sure there may be a new gadget or two that you’ll never need to use in real life slipped into the fold, maybe a more ergonomic grip, but the options remain largely the same. Here’s a pretty cool multi-tool design that trades in the pliers for an adjustable wrench. You also get a full set of hexes and a blade. While this tool doesn’t exactly scream “my own personal McGuyver”, it is nice to see a diversion from the standard templates. Design by Ionut Predescu. [Ionut Predescu via Industrial Design Served]

Donkey Kong Like You’ve Never Seen it Before

donkey kong11 Donkey Kong Like Youve Never Seen it Before

You thought you were obsessed with video games. Check out the articulate work done here on this custom Donkey Kong shower. Despite being gawked at by a giant primate, this shower would be pretty sweet to lather yourself with Irish Springs in. Colombian artists Andres Barragan and Miss Vynilos put this piece of artwork together pixel by pixel (read: bath tile by bath tile). I can barely even turn the shower on when I wake up in the morning. [Gizmodo]

$4400 Phone Could Prove That Looks are Everything

gresso $4400 Phone Could Prove That Looks are Everything

Straight from the halls of overpriced gadgets you can gawk at but never afford (and perhaps wouldn’t want to anyway), the Gresso Skeleton Gold is a stylish cell phone that makes its lavish living on 18k gold keys and a 42k sapphire crystal display that you can see clean through. With a price tag like that and such indulgent detailing, you’re probably reading on for the jaw-dropping tech to come. Stop reading and start being disappointed because the tech’s not stopping by. Outside of the sparkly keys and stunning display, this phone is brilliantly ordinary–QVGA screen, Windows Mobile 6.0 Standard, Bluetooth, MP3 player, 2 GB internal storage and a 2 MP camera. With that snooze-inducing spec sheet, this $4400 phone had better automatically field calls from the boss, inlaws and stalker ex fiance to earn its keep. On the plus side, production is slated for just 50 phones, so you have the distinct opportunity to stand among an exclusive group of morons that paid way too much for a purty phone. SmartSwitch Makes Wasting Energy More Difficult

smartswitch SmartSwitch Makes Wasting Energy More Difficult

Wasted energy is bad for your wallet, bad for the environment and bad for our future. And yet, it’s just so easy to switch a light on, forget all about it, walk to the next room, switch that light on, turn on the TV, walk to the kitchen to make a snack, leave another light on, and so on. Before you know it you have 4 lights chowing down those kilowatt hours and you’re not actually using any of them.

What if it were a little more difficult to waste energy? Maybe you’d actually shut one light off before turning the next one on? That’s the simple logic behind the SmartSwitch, designed by Peter Russo and Brendan Wypich of Stanford University. The switch is literally harder to flip when power consumption is high, giving a quick tactile reminder to shut off some lights and appliances. When household consumption is low, it flips like a regular light switch. The switch can even be custom configured to reflect your own consumption goals. Simple, innovative solution to a widespread problem. I’d imagine this could pay for itself in no time at all. mario Get Classy With Artistic Video Game Wallpapers

Not content with limited color palettes and pixel counts, deviantArtist Mikaël “Orioto” Aguirre redrew scenes from classic video games, giving them the artistic flare that we could only imagine as kids. Mario, Mega Man, Samus, Sonic and more are rendered in a way that makes their work seem solemn and serious. Being a video game superhero ain’t easy. [deviantArt via Fubiz]

Mood Ring Not Working? Try the Moodwall

moodwall 190209 04 Mood Ring Not Working? Try the Moodwall

The Moodwall turns an ordinary trek under an urban tunnel into a delightful art experience. The 24-meter-long wallpaper, constructed of 2,500 LED lights, interacts with passersby, making them feel happy and safe. This is happening in Amsterdam, so to prevent it from becoming a place for stoned punks to hang out and gawk at the light show, the display is best viewed from the tunnel’s outside boundaries. Urban Alliance, which created the project, hopes that the Moodwall concept can be transformed into a 70 meter-long media wall in Amsterdam Bijilmer, a somewhat seedy area that could use more upbeat spaces. Let’s hope. [via Contemporist]

There’s no way of representing this home without giving up all of the GearCrave home page. This home is tall. You’re looking at the most expensive home in human history, split into two parts of what is one tall tower. This ultramansion will be the home of Mukesh Ambani, the fifth wealthiest man in the world. Ambani’s sky scraping home will be built in Mumbai, India, his current home city. Where did Ambani get the kind of money to finance such an incredible habitat? We’ll let you know the next time you’re filling your gas tank. Politics aside, this brilliant design is scheduled to start building soon, and will be host to Ambani’s family and many international guests. Hirsch Bender and Associates have developed this design, the style of which has become quite common in recent architecture trends. Hell, if we had the money, would we have done anything less?

Scan Design’s Titan Desk

Titan Desk

Scandinavian Design is a cornerstone in modern furniture design– and this next piece will show you exactly how they’ve remained on top of their industry. This desk obviously features a simple yet modern design. It comes as shown in a black stained ash veneer with a chrome leg. First, we love the single leg design– it makes for more legroom and a more ergonomic workspace. Beyond the standard frame are a few accessories which make this desk an ideal work space. The picture above shows one, the Titan File Pedestal. Not pictured is the Titan Lateral File, a bookcase available in a 3- and 5- shelf unit. Bundle the three together and you’ve got one hell of a home office.
