Dell Sees 63% Income Drop

delldude Dell Sees 63% Income Drop

Dude, you’re gettin’ a downturn. Dell’s income fell 63 percent in Q1, from $784 million to $290 million. Stocks are slightly above analyst expectations, but revenue is slightly below. Chairman and CEO Michael Dell speaks of a “powerful replacement cycle, with virtualization and managed services playing larger roles in what customers want and Dell provides.” That’s corporate jargon for “people are doing everything on the Internet and no longer want to pay for products they don’t need.” Revenue even dropped in the “mobile products” category, which includes laptops, even as laptop shipments rose 32 percent. That’s the netbook craze you’re seeing right there. The plan is to improve profit margins over time — though it’s not clear how — and get into more retail stores. [via ComputerWorld]

Trying to stay under a $600 PC budget but can’t wait for the affordable ultrathins or ultrapowerful netbooks? Woot’s got a way out with a $549 Dell 17-inch Studio notebook. Built for entertainment, the refurbished Dell Studio 1737 includes a 2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, 4 GB of RAM, a 320 GB hard drive, a DVD player and burner, a webcam and Vista Home Premium installed. There’s also an HDMI output and a 1-year warranty if you’re a worry wart. I know, PCs don’t make the greatest impulse buys, but normally a 17-inch Studio with these specs will set you back $759, so consider pulling the trigger if you were already shopping.  [via Woot]

Dell Giving Android Netbook a Try

mini10 front Dell Giving Android Netbook a Try

Around here, we see enough carefully-timed press releases and slowly trickling droplets of information that it’s worth a laugh when a company’s spot gets blown up. So here we have a Dell netbook that runs on Google’s Android operating sytem, being announced by a company responsible for the porting of Flash Lite onto the computer. That Bsquare then tried to pull the press release in hopes that people wouldn’t notice (they did) makes the situation more comical. Being an announcement related to Adobe Flash, there’s really no other substantial information except that the netbook will be called the Mini Inspiron 910, but hey, now you know. [Yahoo! Tasty Dell Precision Workstation Photos Leaked

Dell Precision Workstation

From “an industry source,” Engadget got their hands on some convincing photos and specs of Dell’s Intel Nehalem-based Precision workstations. While they’re not as sexy as the new Adamo line of laptops, they do have a beastly amount of RAM. The T3500, starting at $999, hosts up to 24 GB of DDR3 EEC memory and the T5500, starting at $1,620, sports up to 72 GB of memory and Intel Xeon. The flagship T7500 can be equipped with 192 GB of DDR3 EEC memory, plus it has dual native Gen 2 PCIe graphics slots and support for NVIDIA SLI technology. All three models, in addition to having Terminator-like naming schemes, can store up to 1.5 GB in a SATA hard drive. Other features include E-SATA support, dual and quad monitor support and DisplayPort connectors — all in an Energy Star 5.0-compliant package. Availability? Unknown. [via Engadget]

Up Close and Personal with Dell Adamo

dell adamo

All you Dell fans who’ve been just waiting and salivating for a closer look at the new Adamo, it’s finally your day. Engadget unloaded one of these new beauties and has taken some snapshots. Though quite slim and light for its class, apparently it’s not quite as sleek as the Mac Air. It still looks pretty sweet from where we’re sitting. Not sure if the “ultra-sexy packaging” that got torn off says more about the Adamo or the guy opening the package, but here he is in all his naked glory. [Engadget]

Specs, Price, Date for Dell Adamo

Tuesday, March 17, 2009 12:00PM - By Jared Newman

Dell Adamo Notebook

After so much hype, this is it, the supposed MacBook Air rival from Dell, priced and dated for your excitement. The Adamo PC measures 0.65 inches thin, with a 13.4-inch screen and an aluminum body that screams for attention. It’s a bit thinner than the Air — Dell says it’s the thinnest notebook available — but it weighs an entire pound more, four in total (gasp!). Inside, there’s a 1.2-GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor with integrated Intel X4500 graphics, 2GB of RAM and a 128GB SSD. A magnetic cover hides the tacky, yet necessary Windows authenticity sticker. If this loadout isn’t your cup of tea, other additions to the Adamo could follow. This model will set you back $1,999 when it’s released on March 26. [Engadget and Gizmodo]

So Close, Yet So Far From Real Info on the New Dell Adamo

adamo So Close, Yet So Far From Real Info on the New Dell Adamo

For weeks we’ve been seeing very brief, hollow glimpses of the new Dell Adamo from Dell’s teaser campaign videos. The practical information that’s been rendered is virtually non-existent: a 13.3-inch screen and an ultrathin Dell theoretically worthy of taking on the MacBook Air. What’s inside? What features does this Adamo have to offer? It’s beginning to feel like we may never know, and like any secret that’s kept too long, we may not be too overwhelmed when we find out. The latest video in the Adamo series offers a slightly better glimpse inside the making of this machine–that is, if the making entails the Adamo being levitated and passed between a series of robots. Oh well, if this keeps up, we can all continue to watch this thrilling mystery unfold on our new MacBook Airs. Check it out for yourself. [Slash Gear]

mini 10 promise pink 540x411 Dell Mini 10 to make its debut on QVC

In what may be the one of the strangest choices of all time, Dell has decided to offer up its new Mini 10 for pre-orders on QVC.  Yeah, that QVC.  The computer will be available first on the buy-at-home channel February 19th, and then go on sale through its own site a week later on February 26th. Typically not where geeks buy our toys, the choice is an interesting one for Dell- but also one that will undoubtedly bring it a tone more buyers who may not even know what the heck a netbook is before they see the Dell 10 on the network.
