Voodoo Firefly Conceptualizes Portable Gaming

firefly Voodoo Firefly Conceptualizes Portable Gaming

When HP acquired the high-end PC maker Voodoo in 2006, the two companies fused their know-how to create the Blackbird, a snazzy-looking, high-powered gaming desktop. Speculation of a laptop equivalent was answered this week with the Voodoo Firefly, thanks to an exclusive look from Laptop Magazine. The preview breathlessly calls the Firefly “one of the most innovative gaming notebooks we’ve ever fragged on,” featuring a 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Extreme Quad Core PCU, 4GB of RAM, dual ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3870 GPUS running in CrossFire mode and a 250GB, 7,200 rpm hard drive.

We’re particularly tickled with the secondary 4.3-inch, 800×480 resolution screen, allowing gamers to glance at e-mail and other distractions while the main 17.1-inch display is occupied. The multi-touch trackpad is also a nice addition. Sadly, this monstrosity won’t likely see the light of day beyond a demo at CES, but Voodoo says there are more concepts in the works. [Laptop]

Panasonic’s 150-Inch Plasma TV

panasonic 150 Panasonics 150 Inch Plasma TV

Panasonic has a history of saying “mine is bigger”. At CES 2008, they’ve unveiled the biggest yet–a staggeringly huge 150-inch plasma TV that can probably burn the eyelashes off a gnat at 50 paces if you turn the contrast up high enough. It has 4096×2160 native resolution and is the equivalent to nine 50-inch plasma TV screens. We can’t think of any possible use for this without the word “cinema” involved, but the maniac home theatre purist in us is desperately seeking a price tag.

Sony dropped the Mylo 2 internet communicator at CES 2008, calling it “all the fun of a PC in your pocket.” The updated Mylo 2 includes a 3.5-inch touchscreen, wi-fi, and is AIM, Google Talk, and Skype friendly. Mylo 2 is also fully YouTube-able, and includes a 1.3 megapixel camera and a photo editor. Some reviewers are pointing out that the lack of Bluetooth is a serious bummer, and we have to agree but regardless, it still looks pretty fun. Price? Under $300.
