60-Foot Tall Gundam Robot Invading Tokyo

Godzilla better watch its back, because toy maker Bandai is going to erect a 60-foot tall Gundam robot suit at an artificial Toyko Bay island (pardon the obvious Godzilla joke there, it was too good to pass up). Bandai is creating the statue in honor of the anime series’ 30th anniversary. The steel-framed statue is in production now and should be ready to defend Tokyo by July. However, it’ll only stay there for two months before it’s removed from the display site. After that, who knows? Maybe the U.S. could stand it up next to the Statue of Liberty. [via CrunchGear]

The iPod Speaker Teddy Bear

music bear silver The iPod Speaker Teddy Bear

If you’re looking for an iPod speaker system for your girlfriend or child, this one might be a winner. This cute and cuddly teddy bear is actually an iPod speaker system in disguise. The system in concealed in the plush bear (so you don’t see ugly speakers) and you can connect your iPod to it via a USB cord, much like when you connect your phone to your computer. The bear runs on batteries (that hopefully aren’t charging your iPod) and runs $38, which could make it a reasonably affordable gift option. What animals would you like to see a speaker system built in? We’re thinking a dragon or snake option might be pretty cool. [via DVICE]

White Chocolate Keyboard Looks Delicious

chocokeys White Chocolate Keyboard Looks Delicious

I’ll take a bag of chips over sweets any day, but this seems pretty irresistable. Perhaps it’s the foil wrapper, or the way the individual keys so neatly resemble the break points in a Hershey bar, or maybe I just need to eat something. Anyway, as BB Gadgets points out in its  sourcing, the origins of this photo are complicated — and certainly a potential Photoshop job, in my opinion. But if the white chocolate keyboard doesn’t actually exist, it ought to. Milk chocolate would be nice, as well. [via Wired]

One Man’s Quest to Build a Bionic Eye

Friday, March 6, 2009 4:00PM - By

There are already a couple of bionic eye experiments floating around in the scientific world, but one man is working full-time on a DIY solution. As a child, Canadian filmmaker Rob Spence lost one of his eyes in a shotgun accident. Now, with the help of “whiz kid” Kosta Grammatis, Spence wants to stick a tiny camera onto his glass eye, with no budget and only a handful of volunteers and corporate backers to help. The so-called “Eyeborg Project” is still a work in progress, and the mini documentary above ends on a cliffhanger, but you’ve got to appreciate the group’s can-do spirit. Using a bit of text filtering, the Reboundfinder searches for Twitter feeds from people who say they just broke up with their boyfriends or girlfriends. It then re-tweets the results in one easily stalkable thread. Creator Dan Zambonini isn’t expecting anyone to use this for real — he said it’s merely a demonstration of how his filtering prototype “can be easily re-used for other purposes” — but we know the Internet better than that. You’ll find the feed right here, creep. Hilarity has ensued, though, as some clever Twitterers are catching on and gumming up the works. “I’m broken up that my boyfriend dumped on my girlfriend,” reads one example. HDTV + LCD Monitor = Virtual Pinball Awesomeness

Tuesday, March 3, 2009 4:00PM - By

We’ve heard of arcade cabinets, but building your own pinball machine has got to be tougher than sticking a computer in a wooden box with some old joysticks and buttons. Fortunately, the magic of software and widescreen HDTVs makes it easy to construct a reasonable immitation. Hyperspin forum admin BadBoyBill used one high-def TV, laid flat, as the table of his virtual pinball machine, the Hyperpin. An LCD monitor, upright at the end, displays scores and other data, and thanks to the Future Pinball software, he’s able to play 13 tables on one machine. If you can’t be bothered to build one of these yourself, start saving for a pre-made UltraPin. The Web site doesn’t say how much it costs, so be prepared to shell out. [Hyperspin via SlipperyBrick]

Fly R/C Turntable For Party Pilots

turntable Fly R/C Turntable For Party Pilots

With Michael Marcovici’s Turntable Pilot, DJs need not lay a hand on the decks. The Italian inventor, author, entrepreneur and once-programmer has created a wireless turntable system that uses a standard R/C controller to activate a pair motors connected to the deck. One servo controls the pitch of the tonearm, raising and lowering it to the spinning platter below, while a stepmotor drives the motor back and forth. A blue LED illuminates the record’s grooves, which is then captured real-time by a small USB camera, allowing the DJ/pilot to “fly” over the track and touchdown on cue. [via artmarcovici]

R2D2 Boombox Kicks Tunes, Won’t Fix X-Wings

r2d2ghettoblaster R2D2 Boombox Kicks Tunes, Wont Fix X Wings

What’s with Star Wars-themed boomboxes that appear on the Internet with very little accompanying information? Don’t these people realize they’ve got EBay gold on their hands? Like the AT-AT Walker boombox that came before, we know little about the R2-D2 ghetto blaster, except that it was designed by artist Bill McMullen for his “Hype, Hustle, Rip-Off” gallery opening. In other words, it may not be a real thing, but we’d love if it only played chiptunes, as BB Gadgets jokes. Boba Fett wireless speakers next, please. [Mishka Bloglin via BB Gadgets]

paintballturret Paintball Turret Brings Rapid Fire Pain

At a cost of $500 to $1,100 in materials and 30 hours of construction time, you could build a paintball turret just like this one. And there’s no reason not to; this thing fires 34 rounds per second and can even be taken on the road with wireless operation. Can you imagine planting this thing on your buddy’s lawn, then waiting patiently to trigger an ambush? In the arena, though, it’ll prove worthless except maybe to freak out your opponents. Instructional videos are coming soon to paintballturret.com. [Inventgeek via Dvice]
