French designer Mathieu Lehanneur has a high fashion way of dealing with the global food crisis. His “Local River” Plant Aquarium is part fish hatchery, part vegetable garden, part modernist marvel. This refrigerated aquarium breeds freshwater fish and vegetables, where the development of both creates a symbiotic environment. The vegetables strip minerals and nitrates from the water, effectively purifying it for the development of the fish. While the concept of a food-productive fish tank might be unsettling to some, local food fanatics can get their dinner from a body of water in their own home.
