Wednesday StyleCrave: Maui & Sons Vintage
By GrahamCumberbatchOf all the looks lifted from the ’80s and re-appropriated by today’s youth (most often with tritely ironic or just-plain-ugly results), the one look that constituted perhaps the decade’s only timeless contribution to style has been criminally overlooked. Classic beach/surfer style captured the effortless perpetual-summer styling of Cali beach culture and channeled the neon-pastel leanings of the era, fusing them with its most logical complements: sun, sky, and ocean. The result is still the epitome of how to look cool in the summertime, especially in the general vicinity of a large body of water and tan females. In its absence, the new-wave minimalism and DIY efficiency of t-shirt design has been sorely missed, and Lord knows the proliferation of extra-long board shorts has reached its frat-boy tipping point.

Well, Maui & Sons, one of the real O.G.s of surfwear came to the rescue this April, when it recreated a line of its vintage designs from its early days in a collaboration with New York boutique Opening Ceremony (might know it as the store Chloe Sevigny designed her line for). Maui & Sons includes several of the company’s first t-shirt and trunk designs, all prominently featuring its classic, stupid- fresh “cookie” logo (a graphic reference to co-founders first joint venture– a failed cookie business) and its famous shades-sporting Sharkman. The tees are simple and colorful, inspired by the painting style and exceptional design talents of founding partner and cult artist Rick Rietveld.
The stuff is dope, it’s 90-plus degrees where I’m at, and I’m tired of wearing pants (and socks). I hereby unofficially declare this summer, “The Summer of the Beach Bum.”
Pay close attention to the cut and color of the trunks. Long board shorts fit everyone, but for the sake of style, I say go vintage and show a little more skin above the knee. The colors are predictably bright but still very much on-point. Save the earth tones for the fall.
