Walmart + Google = The $200 PC
Nov 04, 2007 - By Mike PayneThe biggest news in Open Source this holiday season isn’t about some new release of Ubuntu with a silly alliterative name… Surprisingly, Walmart steals the spotlight with its $200 Everex TC2502 Green PC. The energy efficient TC2502’s hardware package includes a 1.5gHz processer, DVD-ROM/CD-R drive, 512MB memory, 10/100 Mbps ethernet, and an 80Gb hard drive. From there, the Everex Green PC saves by avoiding the Windows Tax– this machine comes standard with gOS– Google’s operating system and application bundle. This Everex also includes OpenOffice 2.2, effectively giving this machine all the productivity apps one could desire. Is this Crave-worthy? Surprisingly, yes. We’d like to get our hands on the TC2502 just to get the feel of gOS, and to own a little piece of history- the first stone in many that brought down the Windows empire…
